Calma Holistic Therapies Emma Smith-Lane on helping you find your calm with Calma

Emma Smith-Lane is the founder of Calma Holistic Therapies. Based in South Sheilds Northeast England, I can safely say her space is one of the most beautiful and magical spaces I have ever set foot in. It’s a feast for all senses and you can feel the positive energies as soon as you walk through the door. It feels like a majestic cave you would discover in ancient times filled with treasures and possibilities. I was lucky enough to go and chat with Emma about all things Calma and literally everything else in between.  I could have sat with her all day in the captivating surroundings. Emma embodies kindness and goodness. She wants to make a difference no matter how big or small and you can’t help but feel drawn to her energy. Here is a snippet of our conversation (there was far too much to put down in writing!)

Its been so good to chat Emma, briefly, sum up Calma Holistic Therapies for anyone who wants to experience the space and you for themselves.

Calma is a welcoming space created to help you find your own calm.

It's a bohemian-hippy vibe, I wanted it to feel rustic but real!

At Calma you are the priority, and the goal is for you to leave feeling better, whatever that is or feels like for you.

I am passionate about helping people and making a difference and a positive impact wherever I can.

I want people to come and find their own calm at Calma.

Tell me how you got into the world of alternative therapies and holistic living?

I first experienced reiki from a colleague. I was going through a difficult time, and she suggested that I try reiki.  I wasn’t sure what to expect but I can say it was life changing.  I hadn’t experienced anything quite like it and knew that I wanted to know and experience more.  That then led me down the path of changing the way I perceived things, and I knew that I wanted to give that experience to others. There is nothing I love more than knowing people can come to Calma and experience the power of the therapies in the same way that I did, and it can be life changing in the same way for them.

What do you enjoy the most about what you do?

Helping people, it’s as simple as that really. When a client leaves and they feel better in whatever way that means to them is what it’s all about for me. When people tell me they feel a shift in themselves it’s the most rewarding part of what I do.

And the least if there is one?

For me there isn’t any downside to what I do just that I wish I could do it more, which will come in time.

What do you think are the main misconceptions around a holistic way of living or working with alternative therapies?

I think one of the main misconceptions is that you will be fixed instantly and if you aren’t then its all rubbish. With anything in life things take time and it’s a process. Also, I find that if people haven’t experienced Reiki or other holistic, alternative therapies they can be very dismissive and put it all down to woo woo. One of my missions is to open this beautiful world up to others so that everyone can experience the way it can open us up to new, life changing possibilities.

What do you think are the main qualities needed to work in this field?

You must care. You really have to care. You have to care about the person walking through the door and carry on caring when they walk out. I always send feedback to all clients from their sessions. The experience doesn’t finish when you leave the room. Also, empathy, and the ability to listen. Those qualities are so hard to come by and it’s so important to feel seen and heard without judgement.  That is why I offer a listening service as sometimes that’s all we need, someone to listen and just release the load.

What have been the main benefits brought to your life after creating Calma Holistic Therapies?

It’s truly helped me to find me. I know who I am and what I want to do in this life. It has given me the confidence to truly be me and never shrink myself for anything. I know that I can make a difference in this world no matter how big or small that may be.

Your favourite treatment or therapy to receive when it’s your turn to relax?

Reiki and that stems back to the very first treatment I ever received and how it changed my life.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years’ time?

I want to create a safe space on a piece of land that is completely self-sufficient. I want it to be somewhere people can come and free their minds in whatever way that means to them.

Tell me Emma, what does a typical day look like for you right now?

I get up at around 5am and either go for a run or do some yoga. I meditate for around ten minutes and journal, even if it’s just writing words, to get them onto paper and process and release any negative emotions that might be lingering. I also always try to incorporate some self-reiki into my day, it’s really important to me to fit that in. I’ll then have a hot drink and a wash then I’m ready to start my day!
